OK, I looked it up. The record is 12:37.35, run in 2004 by Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia. The woman's record is 14:16.63 by Meseret Defar in 2007, also of Ethiopia. This information is from IAAF (Intl Assoc of Athletics Federations) web-site. They ought to know.
Now you really have something to shoot for. Good Luck!!!!

Kenenisa also owns the 10k world record, one Olympic gold medal, and 12 world cross country titles.
You can read up on him at:

It has a blog feed (where I found your post), biography, trivia, videos, polls, and more.
I'm aiming for a 14 minute MILE!!! :) Yes, definitely not a natural runner! We'll be sure to take some pictures and send them along. Go John's Team!!
Love,

You are all whimps!! I am quite sure I have done a 3-4 minute mile chasing the kids. It's just in little circles and hasn't been timed yet. Some day I'll show em all!!! Well... maybe not but have fun as we are all behind you! John great seeing you the other day. Lunch might work later next week! We'll say the new hair style is in brotherhood with Dan! I am not far from your length but you may still have more in some spots. Just make sure you keep the cap on in the sun as one things guys like you with a full head of hair don't know is the scalp burns in a hurry!!! Talk to you soon!!
